Abstract
Internet of Things (IoT) is already part of our everyday life and is expected to grow considerably in the coming years. Such an invasion is not without risk, in particular on the privacy level. This study highlights the issue related to the security of personal information as perceived by users. Through an exploratory study conducted with 14 interviewees followed by a confirmatory study with 1006 people, we strive to look for needs and concerns of consumers about the three different categories of IoT. Results reveal that users are willing to use IoT for daily tasks, in particular, smart home devices that they consider relevant for safety purposes or to save the energy of their house and finally to manage their time in a better manner. They are willing to provide their personal information when they feel that they control these smart devices. Hence, the user’s attitude and the security of perceived personal information vary according to the category of IoT. Results also show significant differences between men and women regarding the category of IoT they would prefer to buy as well as the main criteria they consider when purchasing smart devices.

Using Internet of things/smart devices is a good idea It is useful to use Internet of things/smart devices Using Internet of things/smart devices is a wise idea Using Internet of things/smart devices is pleasant I like the idea of using Internet of things/smart devices I would use Internet of things/smart devices voluntarily I would enjoy using Internet of things/smart devices
Security pf personal information
I feel apprehensive about using Internet of things/smart devices I am worried about the amount of personal information you may be revealing I would hesitate to use a wearable device as in the case I make mistakes I could not correct them Internet of things/smart devices makes me feel somewhat uncomfortable I am concerned that the Internet of things/smart devices may collect too much personal information As a result of me using Internet of things/smart devices, information about me which I consider private is now more readily available to others As a result of me using Internet of things/smart devices, information about me is out there, and if used, it will invade my privacy When providing personal information in order to use the Internet of things/smart devices, I am concerned that it may be a means of getting hold of information on myself for other purposes I am concerned that Internet of things/smart devices share my personal information with other entities without requesting my authorization |
