Abstract

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) form a network on the go without the need of any infrastructure and centralize administration. For a mobile node to communicate with a node outside the MANET a gateway has to be put in place to translate one topology architecture (infrastructure) to another topology (uninfrastructure) to create a hybrid network. Different Internet discovery approaches have been created (proactive, reactive and hybrid) and a recent focus is on adaptive approach which adapts the time to live (TTL), Periodicity of Internet gateway advertisement and route path. Researcher in Cluster Internet discovery approach have shown a good performance in the MANET but less research has been done in this area. The discovery of Internet gateway still need further research due to the fact that MANET topology is not stable, different scenarios or environment will need a different approach for the discovery of the Internet gateway. Our contribution to this research is to combine the clustering approach and Internet gateway discovery approach, to make the Clusterhead as the mobility Internet gateway relay of the fixed Internet Gateway to decrease the Overhead, end to end packet delay. This paper review will analyze the pros and cons of different approaches (reactive, proactive, hybrid, adaptive and cluster Internet discovery approaches) in MANET. A comparison of these approaches will be done. A future vision of a new approach will be proposed.
