An Efficient Social-Aware Routing Strategy in Mobile Social Networks

Abstract

As a solution to extend the cellular networks’ coverage and support more consumers at a lower cost, mobile social networks (MSNs) are used for delay-tolerant data transmission in an opportunistic fashion: messages are transmitted through opportunistic encounters between mobile nodes without the infrastructure. It is common to employ DTN routing algorithm in MSNs, among which Bubble Rap routing is suitable for MSNs since it involves two social characteristics of MSN: community and heterogeneous activity of node. However, there are two important issues that have not been well examined when exploiting Bubble Rap for data transmission in MSN. That is, inaccurate community detection which results from the fact that Bubble Rap neglected transient social groups will leads to a lot of meaningless forwarding of message; and because of the greedy forwarding mode, stuck messages are overlooked by Bubble Rap and will fail to deliver. In this paper, an efficient routing algorithm based on Bubble Rap is proposed. First, the cyclical and time-evolving characteristics in MSN are investigated by analysing the real-world mobility trace and the two social characteristics are utilized to develop a time evolving community detection method. Second, we present a timer-based relay selection mechanism. A timer is designed to discover stuck messages, and an alternative relay is scheduled to deliver those messages. Simulation results show that the proposed routing outperform the original Bubble Rap and other mainstream routing algorithms.
