Abstract

By enabling nodes to harvest energy from their surrounding environments, Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (EH-WSNs) solves the energy-supply problem faced by traditional battery-powered WSNs. Without the needs of battery replacement and recharge, EH-WSNs is environment-friendly and has an infinite lifetime in theory. Different form battery-powered WSNs MAC protocols which take the energy conservation as the most important principle, EH-WSNs MAC protocols are designed to maximize the network performance under certain energy harvesting conditions. In this paper, A MAC protocol named Probe-Polling was proposed for EH-WSNs based on polling scheme. Probe-Polling can effectively decrease the network bandwidth waste due to collision by using probe packets sent by polled sensors. The proposed MAC is implemented and evaluated using MATLAB. The result shows that Probe-Polling performs well in both throughput and fairness, and has a low inter-arrival time.
