Abstract

The World Robot Summit (WRS) Junior Robot Category’s School Robot Challenge provides an opportunity for school-age children to learn to program the Pepper robot, a sociable humanoid robot offered by SoftBank Robotics, Inc. to realize their ideas for living with a social robot in school. This paper presents a preliminary investigation on the programming performance of the participating teams in the School Robot Challenge. The data for the pilot study was collected from the WRS 2018 Junior Robot Category’s School Robot Challenge held in Tokyo, Japan in October 2018. Analysis of the programming performance of the participating teams at WRS 2018 Junior School Robot Challenge indicates that having access to Pepper, the standard platform robot, does not guarantee the success of the teams in terms of achieving higher rankings. Although it is not clear what contributed to the success of the teams, there are some indications that access to the standard platform robot before the competition and the programming experience have some influence on the teams’ performances. Further investigation is needed to determine what contributes to the teams without access to the sociable robot becoming successful with its programming.
