Simulation of the Effect of Selected National Values on the Braking Curves of an ETCS Vehicle

Abstract

The ERTMS/ETCS system is intended to provide an interoperable approach to train control and signalling in the EU. Adapting its functionality to the requirements of the different infrastructure managers is to be ensured by national values. The selected variables have an impact on railway safety as their values, together with other parameters form the basis for determining the braking curves of a vehicle running under the supervision of ERTMS/ETCS (ETCS vehicle). Braking curves determine the length of braking distance. The paper presents the results of research on the influence of selected variables on the shape of braking curves. The nature of the tested variables and their application for two models of Gamma and Lambda trains were discussed. The simulation was carried out with the use of the “Braking curves simulation tool” and the assessment of the results on the basis of original criteria.
