Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the type of cognitive process used in exploratory projects. To achieve the study objective, the study relied on exploratory research design with a focus on historical case studies; the Manhattan Project and the Polaris Project. The study findings revealed that management of innovative projects relies on different aspects. It was also observed that design theory remains to be an essential tool in successful project management. The concept is perceived to be a necessary instrument, as it helps in creation of new knowledge while enabling project stakeholders to learn new aspects.
