JigsAR: A Mixed Reality System for Supporting the Assembly of Jigsaw Puzzles

Abstract

Augmented reality used to be only possible for science fiction. However, nowadays it is used in different areas for the improvement of human life. Even jigsaw puzzles could be improved by AR, and that’s the purpose behind JigsAR: transforming a classic into something new. JigsAR is a web-based solution that is made with Javascript to improve the assembly of a jigsaw puzzle. JigsAR uses color quantization and image histograms to compare the piece with a database and indicate to the user the three most probable correct places. Two hypotheses were tested with twenty-five users to evaluate the tool effectiveness. In the end, the user test results are discussed from the point of view of ergonomics and technology usage.
