Abstract
Decisions in higher education institutions may have an impact on several stakeholders at the same time (students, academic personnel, teaching and non-teaching staff), for this reason, it is crucial to try to make the best-informed decision possible. The evidence-based practice is a method for decision-making processes, using evidence from multiple sources in a conscientious, explicit and judicious manner. This practice can be leveraged in higher education; however, its implementation and adoption may take a long time and demand a lot of effort. The aim of this paper is to motivate higher education institutions to follow evidence-based, data-driven thinking. We present the evidence-based practice – in general and from the point of view of higher education –, give guidance on how an institution can start applying the method in decision-making or going further if it is on the journey, and encourage data-driven thinking pointing out the different areas where data analytics can be beneficial.
