User Expectations of Social Robots in Different Applications: An Online User Study

Abstract

Social robots are expected to engage in various occupational roles in people’s daily lives. In this study, online questionnaires were used to measure user expectations of social robots in different applications in terms of sociability and competence. One-way analysis of variance and hierarchical cluster analysis results indicated that users have different expectations of robots depending on the application. Robots for education and healthcare are expected to exhibit extremely high sociability and competence. By contrast, robots performing security tasks are expected to be more competent and less sociable, and the opposite is expected of robots for companionship and entertainment. The results of this study can help establish future social robot design guidelines for different applications.
