Abstract
The aim of this paper is to explain the nature of geographical spaces as simultaneously material, relational and semantic. Given this functional characteristic, it is stated that such spaces do not exist—as such—materially or empirically. Instead, they are transformed and transferred as elements of communication in social systems. Models play a central role in the process of transformation and transfer as they are capable of creating geographical spaces in a comprehensive albeit non-holistic way.
