Abstract

This work in progress presents the toolkit Soft2Soft, for the digital recognition of textile gestures. In this context, the term gesture means a non-verbal way of human-computer interaction (HCI), through the hands, using textile materialities. The first section presents a background of projects that involve HCI with textile elements, which have inspired and informed our work. The second section details the toolkit that provides gesture recognition over wearable textiles (through actions such as button-up, sticking hook and loop pieces, sliding a zipper) and non-wearable textiles (e.g., going through the fabric with a needle, caressing the textile, squeezing, or pinching the fabric). Here, we emphasize calling the interaction through (with) the textile materialities as a gesture, meaning that it intends to express a feeling, an idea, or a thought, not as just a simple, functional action. Finally, we present and discuss some preliminary uses of the toolkit and potential applications that Soft2Soft will allow.
