Abstract

The auditory user interface (AUI) has been applied to various human-computer interaction systems; thus, the improper design of the auditory interface has caused a lot of use inconvenience. We focus on the use of AUI in complex information systems and discuss the role of AUI as the supplementary information of the visual interface in complex information systems. In this review article, the suitable use and evaluation methods of the AUI have been discussed. A model called RCSO has been formulated to provide theoretical support for more future research. In order to improve the usability of auditory icons in complex information systems, this article mainly analyzes the recognizability, the duration, the holding time and subjective preference of auditory icons.
