Abstract

Making use of the data from narrative writings of the same topic, this paper has used the common high-frequency adjective “大” (big) and the common high-frequency noun “城市” (city) as the main vocabularies to examine the frequency of all adjective-noun collocations produced by Chinese as Second Language (CSL) learners. From the perspective of lexical semantics and the methodology of quantitative linguistics, the development of the semantic network of the CSL production has been investigated.

Notes

  1. 1.

Due to the limited number of sentences produced by CSL learners at elementary level, this paper considers the development of CSL learners at intermediate and advanced levels for the time being.

  2. 2.

Copyrighted by the Research Department of Computational Linguistics, Institute of Language and Character Applications, Ministry of Education, produced by Xiao Hang, download address: www.cncorpus.org.

  3. 3.

The output usage rate of “城市” was 74.2% at intermediate level, 93.6% at advanced level, and 25.1% for native speakers. Usage rate = the number of times a word is used/the total number of words in the corpus.
