Abstract

In server cluster systems, process replication approaches are widely used to provide reliable and available distributed application services. However, in process replication approaches, a large amount of electric energy is consumed by a server cluster since multiple replicas of each application process are performed on multiple virtual machines in different physical servers. In this paper, the IRATB-FMRT (improved redundant active time-based with forcing meaningless replicas to terminate) algorithm is proposed to reduce the total electric energy consumption of a server cluster by forcing meaningless replica to terminate. The evaluation results show the total electric energy consumption of a server cluster and the average response time of each process can be reduced in the IRATB-FMRT algorithm.
