Abstract
Universities are often a dominant stakeholder in the innovation projects of industries, society and government and an active participant in research for innovative development of technologies, economic and political models and education. Furthermore, there is much evidence that universities per se are a key player in the innovation process. Regardless of this active, basic or no role of the university in innovation development, the university must follow a structural and systematic process for the development and management of innovation. This study analyzes innovation processes in universities, using bibliometric analysis to reveal the evolution of the concept and the research sub-streams related to this broad and complex topic, such the innovation process is. The results show interesting insights on the by-words and by-phrases research along with the university innovation process which enclose the sub-streams and co-activities of universities in their innovation management. These sub-streams deserve considerable attention, related to the innovation process in universities such as innovation networks, innovation methods such as design thinking, regional innovation, university-industry cooperation, ecosystem innovation, and innovation systems. The results from the study contribute to the university management and innovation management science fields by mapping the existing research done and discussing the major trends and directions of its evolution. This study contributes to building a comprehensive and structured innovation process in universities to support project management of innovations.
