Abstract

Introduction: The current crisis situation leads us to reflect on the effects that Chile has had throughout the various pandemics that have hit the world in the last 200 years and on the level of impact that they have had on its social development. Objective: To analyze, from a socio-historical perspective, the main elements that characterized the pandemics that occurred between the years 1850–1923 in Chile. Methods: Main component techniques were used to analyze multivariate data, in terms of new noncorrelated variables, and multivariate sample techniques in a space of reduced dimension (Biplot). Results: The research showed the relative and direct effects of pandemics in Chile on the economic life of the country, and their influence on mortality and birth rates. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the consequences of these health crises were multidimensional and that they significantly affected the development of the nation.
