Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify and to analyse the view of experts in tourism, geographic information system and spatial planning regarding smart tourism destinations, using the case of the city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Therefore, focusing on the convergence of the concepts of smart tourism destinations and smart cities, a qualitative research was conducted based on semi-structured interviews and content analysis. According to the theoretical-conceptual perspective and the opinion of the experts, Lisbon is recognized as a very attractive and competitive tourist destination but is still in the process of establishing itself as a smart destination. Considering the factors that constitute smart cities and smart tourist destinations, the results show that Lisbon stands out especially in relation to culture and creativity, innovation, information and communication technologies, sustainability, and governance. Although the city of Lisbon has a consolidated strategic plan for tourism and a strong public-private relationship, to become a smart tourism destination, it is essential that there is greater investment in technological infrastructure, greater involvement of citizens in the process of tourism governance and better information management as a strategic tool for tourism.
