Abstract

Neurosurgical procedures often involve local skull bone removal to combat specific pathologies. Defect covering is mandatory in most cases and usually requires the application of bespoke and synthetically engineered implants. Since manufacturing management faces several barriers in the design, fabrication, and application process, there is an unmet need for improvement. In this article, the authors review the background of skull bone removal and calvarial reconstruction techniques, highlight the challenges on the horizon, and investigate future pathways.
