Abstract
Research and Teaching Platform (RTP) can be considered as an essential occasion of doctoral education in design (DED), which provides students with opportunities for communication and reflection. However, varied RTP systems and training backgrounds lead to the cooperative barrier. Based on this condition, the researcher investigates 1,229 RTPs from 71 DED programs worldwide and attempts to find out a common foundation of academic communication. From this point, the researcher hopes to expand the cooperation among design research communities. Four findings emerge: Cross-discipline cooperation becomes more frequently, and the boundaries of design discipline have been expanded; Secondly, the naming of overseas RTPs is narrative, conducive to spreading and ideological consolidation; Thirdly, the linkage between RTPs and commerce helps to the raising funding and the transformation of research outputs; Lastly, some RTPs released their outputs only to their staff, which is contrary to the principle of Open Science and instructing the public. Based on the above findings, the research outputs will be expected to help RTPs and their DED programs in mainland China to improve and have more cooperation with ones overseas.
