Evaluation of Videoconferencing Support System Using Dynamically Controlled Blur

Abstract

Showing one’s face plays an important role in rich communication and in fostering trust. However, owing to embarrassment, many people use videoconferencing systems with the camera turned off, especially in informal situations. In this article, a videoconferencing system is proposed that blurs the faces of the participants. At the start of the communication, the faces of the participants are completely blurred. In the initial stage of this research, a prototype system was constructed that changes the state of blurring as time passes in a meeting based on the hypothesis that continuing a conversation deepens communication. In addition, it was verified whether the psychological burden of displaying a user’s face can be reduced. Experimental results suggest that the prototype system can reduce the psychological burden of displaying one’s face.
