Abstract
In this paper, we present MixedView, an omnidirectional camera that provides a unique view mixing omnidirectional and detailed 2D images. Generally, omnidirectional content is generated by enlarging a single 2D image with a fisheye lens. Although the enlarged content affords users views from multiple angles, because the resolution decreases when users focus on part of the content, retrieving detailed visual information about other objects or texts in the view remains challenging. Therefore, we have combined a low-resolution omnidirectional image with a high-resolution 2D image by connecting two devices: an omnidirectional camera and a smartphone. We compared our prototype system with another omnidirectional camera regarding the clarity of the area in focus. The system with two devices is simple enough for use not only by novices but also for a range of applications in communication and entertainment.
