Abstract
Order picking is the warehouse process of consolidating stored items according to customer orders. When designing a zoned order picking system, two problems need to be solved in the light of performance objectives: zoning and item-to-zone assignment. Usually, these problems are tackled in such a way that assignment is done after the zones were formed. Since both problems are interrelated, we propose an integrative decision model and solve it by means of optimization software. Based on a numerical study the suitability of the model and weaknesses of the solution approach are pointed out.
