Abstract

Global e-commerce depends on mediums of exchange that allow users to make secure, quick, and easy transactions without the difficulties of traditional payment methods. We analyze cryptocurrency in general and inspect Bitcoin specifically as a digital-currency option for global e-commerce. Bitcoin can meet the needs of future e-commerce, but it suffers from several types of risks—including social, ethical, and economic—that can pose a threat to online users and must be addressed. Our goal with this research in progress is to review the literature on Bitcoin as a premier future online payment method, Bitcoin proponents must understand how it is being used in e-commerce now and then educate users about the value of digital currency as we move deeper into the digital age. In this work in progress, we define cryptocurrency, note the need for Bitcoin research, and discuss the pros and cons of Bitcoin as a payment platform.
