All-Age Co-creation: A Study of Pedestrian System Service Design from the Perspective of Community Building

Abstract

Using the pedestrian system in Hongqiao Airport’s New Village in Shanghai as a case study, this study uses participatory research and co-creation workshops to explore the elements of community-based pedestrian systems and design strategies. The study shows that a people-oriented pedestrian system should enhance mobility at the physical level, safety at the spiritual level, fun at the interactive level, identity at the social level, and sustainability at the cultural level. We propose a physical infrastructure for walking that meets the diverse needs of all ages, creates a shared and open environment that promotes a desired lifestyle, and shapes cultural symbols for a sustainable community. The study shows that a human-scale community walking system can support human relationships and enhance the livability of urban communities.
