Abstract

Ergonomic risk assessment and worker protection are more important today than ever before. Several summaries and evaluation articles on ergonomic risk assessment methods can be found in the literature. Still, most of these are field- or evaluation approach-specific and thus not well generalisable. We have conducted a comprehensive search in the present work and focused on creating a comprehensive and extensive collection of ergonomic risk assessment methods. The study aimed to prepare a selection system for ergonomic risk assessment methods by organising these methods using a systematisation framework applicable for industry work. The new categorisation could help industry professionals select the best-fitting ergonomic risk assessment method for their field. It could be helpful for academic teachers and DHM developers as well. We categorised the methods into three categories, namely General Risk Assessment Methods, Manual Material Handling Risk Assessment Methods and Specific methods. The techniques were analysed based on aspects that help highlight their strengths, weaknesses, and potential fit for assessing defined industry workplaces. The analysis approaches we used were body part-based analysis, field-specificity analysis, output-analysis and specific aspects for pushing and pulling and lifting in the case of Manual Material Handling methods.
