Abstract

Comfort and posture analysis was conducted on 10 modeled individuals in a pre-designed excavator using the CAD-based software, RAMSIS. Individuals’ anthropometry was based on the distribution of 2010 German Males and Females, and they were seated and replicated into the pre-determined position before posture and comfort calculations were performed. All individuals in the analyzed sample were given medium torsos and waists, predetermined by the software, and the heights of the individuals were varied based on a statistically normal (Z) distribution. Analysis was also performed to see if there was any functional dependence between the heights of the operators and the level of discomfort calculated by the software. Based on the analysis we found a weak positive association between operators' heights and the discomfort value. Additionally, optimization calculations were performed to determine the ideal male and female operator height to operate a statically designed (no adjustable features to increase comfortability) excavator seat. These heights were found to be 1.77 m and 1.66 m and correspond to the 39th and 52nd percentiles of 2010 German males and females respectively.
