Message Notification System to Reduce Excessive Smartphone Use by Displaying Smartphone Usage Status as a Character’s Condition

Abstract

Many smartphone users frequently check their smartphones daily, and excessive smartphone use can cause various problems. In a previous study, we proposed the CHIAPON message notification system to reduce smartphone use. The CHIAPON system notifies users of messages from anthropomorphic characters that encourage them to reduce excessive smartphone use according to their smartphone usage data. In this paper, we incorporate status factors common to role-playing games into the CHIAPON system to encourage users to become more emotionally involved with the anthropomorphic character. By changing the character’s condition based on the values of these status factors and providing feedback to the user regarding how the anthropomorphic character is weakening due to excessive smartphone use, the user can feel more encouraged to reduce smartphone use. We evaluated whether notifying users of changes in their character’s condition improved their motivation to refrain from using their smartphones. We also evaluated whether the time spent using a smartphone was reduced. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed system could change the participants’ motivation to reduce smartphone use.
