Abstract

Chinese characters are the most important cultural symbol in the life of Chinese people as well as an important element in traditional creation activities and modern design practice. The design of daily articles in traditional Chinese culture carries much information associated with Chinese characters. “Thing as a carrier of characters” is a manifestation of combining Chinese characters with creation activities, embodying the “order of things” in our daily life. This paper stresses the complicated, diversified, vivid and stereoscopic interaction relations between Chinese characters and people, and traditional Chinese material space and daily life form. In the modern design context dominated by technologies, “things” and “characters” are still very important media, only needing to take on new relations and forms in a new scene of daily life. Therefore, the traditional Chinese creation concept of “thing as a carrier of characters” is of important value to modern design practice and the study of methodology.
