Abstract

Children's activity space is one of the important components in urban public space. With the acceleration of urbanisation, children's activity sites in urban public spaces are subjected to a number of factors such as economic and environmental constraints, so children's activity spaces have not been given much attention, which leads to the neglect of the environment for children's growth. In many cities in China, public spaces are unreasonably designed, making the urban public spaces available for activities near residential areas completely inadequate to meet the daily needs of the people, let alone spaces specifically designed for children's activities.

Creating an age-appropriate space for children in urban public spaces is not just about creating space, but more importantly about getting into the hearts of children. What is needed in today's urban public spaces is a safe, fun and vibrant space for children's activities. The question of how to make urban public spaces that meet the needs of contemporary children's activities is a constant concern for us in the future. What kind of activity space can be beneficial to children's development and health? What kind of space design can meet the needs of children's activities? How can we create an urban public space that is suitable for children's growth, so as to promote their overall healthy development and achieve real sustainable development?

This paper investigates the design of children's public outdoor activity spaces; studies advanced research results at home and abroad; analyses the situation of children's activities in the outdoors; finds shortcomings in the design of outdoor children's activity spaces; discusses the design of outdoor children's public activity spaces from the direction of design science, so as to put forward suggestions that are more suitable for the design of children's activity spaces in China; provides a reasonable theoretical basis for the design of children's public outdoor activity spaces; makes the theoretical system of the design of children's public activity spaces in China more perfect, and designs outdoor activity spaces that are more in line with children's activities in China in the future, so that people's quality of life can improve their lives.
