Abstract
The proliferation of affordable smartphones has led to a significant increase in the number of apps that teach languages. These apps are designed to positively influence their users to learn a new language and are easily accessible in the app store with many of them having a free version. Research suggests that learning is a process that can lead to permanent behaviour change or potential behaviour change. Thus, understanding the strength or potential of these apps to lead to the behaviour change of learning a new language is important in determining the success or otherwise of the app. To contribute to research in the area of app-based learning, in this paper, we present the preliminary results of reviewing learning apps in the Google Play Store. We use the App Behaviour Change Scale (ABACUS) that measures the behaviour change potential of smartphone apps to determine how likely an app will lead to the behaviour change of learning a new language. The results of this study can guide application developers in designing apps that will lead to a positive change in behaviour when learning new languages by highlighting the aspects of the app that can be improved based on the ABACUS scale.
