Abstract
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are significantly transforming the definition ‘vehicle’ on the road and in the market through their disruptive and pervasive technologies. Stakeholder research has consistently overlooked consumers and their CAV privacy knowledge. This paper addresses this through evaluating the consumer’s current privacy knowledge through a survey, focus group, and analysis of manufacturer’s privacy provisions. It found the materials insufficient, leaving consumers unsure of their vehicle’s data collecting functionalities. In this study, 168 survey respondents and 6 focus group participants were consulted, and their responses studied using thematic analysis. The results highlight the consumer’s need to be ‘Informed’, particularly in relation to themes around the requirements and provision of information, as well as the communication and control of privacy. Further themes such as ‘Disinterest’ and ‘Distrust’ emerged from the focus group. This paper recommends industry prioritisation of consumer education, introducing vehicle-specific data protection legislation, government assurance of manufacturer compliance, and use of the manufacturer’s app to control privacy. Vehicle purchasers must be informed of a vehicle’s data transmission, collection, and protection technologies, and how to make use of its privacy controls.
