Abstract
Raft is a well-known, distributed ordering protocol used for replicating services on multiple servers for crash-tolerance. Chain Paxos is a recent development that is shown to offer a much higher throughput than many known ordering protocols. This superior performance is attributed to different dissemination structures employed between the lead server and the rest, while the comparative evaluation experiments do not employ batching of service requests for ordering. We observe here, through a range of experiments, that the throughput differences indeed vary from being significant to negligible when batching is allowed and batch size varied. This behaviour is explained by modelling the ordering process at the lead server and deriving stability conditions at various stages.
