Abstract
In this paper we describe a monitoring system for IT environments such as Data Centers or other IT infrastructures, completely based on low cost open-hardware and open-source technologies. We have designed an ad-hoc PCB based on the ESP-8266 microcontroller integrating all the needed sensors. All data collected using MQTT communications is then sent to a Zabbix server where we integrate environmental data with networks and systems monitoring.
The aim of this work is to provide Data Centers with an open-source monitoring system alternative, giving administrators a powerful tool that integrates Arduino-compatible open-hardware sensors integrated in a Zabbix environment. The system is based on IoT protocols and standards, with the objective of it being as flexible and modular as possible. Zabbix can monitor multiple parameters on a network and compute servers and can be configured to send alerts or other events and can also work as a reporting and data visualization tool. Integrating IoT devices into a Zabbix server offers the possibility of monitoring virtually any parameter administrators may think of.
The hardware devices designed have been tested and we show data comparing our system with data obtained from the actual CITIC Data Center’s monitoring system, a proprietary solution, so we can offer a correlation between these two systems.
