Abstract

We have been enjoying different modes of transport for many decades already, including road transport, water transport, and air transport. Further reflections of this are the pilotless forms, such as autonomous cars, unmanned water/underwater vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and so on. Even though they are diverse conceptually and technologically, we argue that there are common current challenges characterizing all pilotless vehicles: (i) Standardization is not yet adequate and exhaustive; (ii) The current rules and legislation are insufficiently capable of properly regulating the use of such vehicles; (iii) Accountability is an issue and hence it is not straightforward to identify who is responsible in case of an accident. As a result: pilotless vehicles are not widely used and deployed, authorities are not capable of fully regulating their use, insurance companies have no corresponding products, and so on. Addressing this problem, we provide a brief review of pilotless vehicles from a user perspective, as a step forward in better understanding and utilizing them.
