Abstract

This study employed Task-Based Teaching and Learning (TBTL) in Virtual Reality Assisted Dental Training (VRADT) to seamlessly integrate Virtual Reality (VR) into the overall dental training process. This new integration focused on addressing the current deficiency in manual skills among dental students during school training and clinical internships. This study involved a comprehensive review of VRADT and TBTL literature, culminating in the proposal of a TBTL—VRADT Integration Model. Utilizing survey methodology (34 valid responses) and user interviews (5 dental students), the study explored dental students’ perspectives on the application of VR in tooth extraction procedures. The TBTL—VRADT model was illustrated in the context of VR-assisted dental student training for tooth extraction. Employing the Kano model (34 valid responses), essential features for VR systems in tooth extraction procedures were identified. The study concluded with the design of a high-fidelity VR system prototype based on the TBTL—VRADT and Kano models. The TBTL—VRADT model facilitated the integration of meaningful tasks throughout VR-assisted dental training, effectively harmonizing VR with the overall dental training process. This model played a pivotal role in planning the comprehensive design of VR systems for Virtual Reality Assisted Dental Training (VRADT). The TBTL—VRADT model significantly enhanced practical manual skills training for dental students, improving their proficiency in hands-on procedures.
