Substitutional Reality (SR) is a type of mixed reality addressing the disparity existing between a virtual environment and the physical environment in which the user is actually located. While university and professional Virtual Reality laboratories largely consist of empty rooms, especially in the context of domestic environments users are frequently surrounded with physical objects such as furniture, chairs, desks. These objects are not usually part of the virtual environment and might impede the user’s experience. In this context, substitutional reality seeks to incorporate real physical objects in the virtual environment, by substituting them with mismatching virtual counterparts. This practice has been found to enhance the experience and believability of being in virtual environments.
