Definition
The term spatial analysis along networks refers to a set of methods or techniques for analyzing events that occur along networks (Okabe and Sugihara 2012). The events include two types: events that occur exactly on a network (e.g., traffic accidents on an expressway), termed on-network events, and those that occur alongside networks (e.g., stores facing a street), termed alongside-network events. The alongside-network events include not only examples such as that above but also those that can be assigned to a network according to a certain rule (e.g., a large factory is assigned to its access point on a road). On-network events and alongside-network events are subsumed under along-network events.
