Definition
Geographic data models are used to represent real world objects (e.g., buildings, roads, land parcels, rainfall, soil types, hills and valleys, etc.) within a geographic information system. These data models are used by the GIS to perform interactive queries, execute analyses, and produce cartographic maps. Many different data types may be used to model this data. Commercial GIS systems are intended to address diverse user requirements across a broad spectrum of application domains. Some users of these systems are focused on traditional two-dimensional vector representations of spatial data (e.g., modeling topologically integrated cadastres, road networks, or hydrologic networks), while other users are concerned with raster data obtained from satellite imagery and other aerial image sources.
