Abstract
In order to survive, manufacturing systems need to adapt themselves at an ever-increasing pace to incorporate new technology, new products, new organizational structures, etc. Distributed intelligent manufacturing systems are very large and complex systems that require appropriate technologies and tools, not only to operate but also to be designed. In the specialized literature there is a large number of approaches to develop this kind of systems, but not all of them are suitable to deal with the requirements of the new manufacturing era. In this paper we make a deep analysis of the different approaches reported in the field and make a comprehensive analysis on the appropriateness of every approach for coping with the requirements of today’s Intelligent Manufacturing Systems.
