Abstract
In Finland, a lot of register-based data is available for research purposes, e.g. through Statistics Finland’s remote access system. When a huge quantity of highly detailed micro data is available, maintaining the confidentiality must be carefully ensured. One common national remote access system would improve the safety of data and simplify data access for researchers. The infrastructure project Finnish Microdata Access Services (FMAS) has been launched for this purpose. The project has been slowed down by the lack of funding but the work and co-operation between different register keeping agencies continues.
