Abstract
The tremendous growth of traffic demand over wireless networks is boosting a great deal of effort towards novel mechanisms for increasing the network capacity, in particular in cellular networks. One of the approaches currently under investigation is the carrier aggregation of LTE in licensed and unlicensed spectrum, which led 3GPP to include in the last Release the specification of Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) of LTE in the 5 GHz unlicensed spectrum. However, for LTE to fairly coexist with WiFi, many open issues still require investigation, as there is not yet a clear consensus on the actual impact that each network can have on the performance of the other.
In this paper, we evaluate the performance of LAA-LTE and WiFi when coexisting in the unlicensed spectrum under saturated traffic conditions and different network deployments. Our main contribution is the study of scenarios in which the two networks have unbalanced and asymmetric location, which allows to highlight how different AP/eNB location and mutual distance play a considerable role in the overall and individual performance.
