Abstract
Drawing inspiration for his chapter title from a Jim Jarmusch film, the author describes an encounter with Carl Adam Petri that captures his unusual style and his deep and original thinking.

Notes
- 1.
The similarity of the working processes of Petri and Socrates was pointed to me by Manuel Silva.
- 2.
I also own a second piece of Petri memorabilia: a Petri-Puzzle, signed by Petri, that was distributed at the ceremony in which he was handed the Siemens Ring by the German president Roman Herzog (Fig. 5). After the ceremony Petri sat at a table and we queued for him to sign our puzzles with his careful calligraphy.
- 3.
He even had to pass a job interview with Petri, which must have been an extraordinary experience.
