Abstract

The Sentinel system was established in 1984 for the national surveillance of communicable diseases. An epidemiological database is maintained and updated practically in real time. Sentinel system collects data from approximately 500 sentinel general practitioners (SGP) spread throughout the country, using computer terminals and more precisely videotex (a low cost telecommunication terminal of the French public telecommunication company).

SITIE is a workstation devoted to epidemiological data selection, analysis and representation. Disease selection, spatial and temporal representations can be done using a user friendly graphic interface. SITIE is built upon the AVS graphics package, and allows one to create new applications using previously developed modules linked together to form a network. SITIE can be viewed as a tool-box for epidemiological data representations.

In this way, we have developed a new tool to follow the activity of sentinel general practitioners using a cartographic representation of their participation.
