Abstract

One area in science that computer modelling and its applications are extensively used is ion-atom collisions. In this paper we present computer simulations for various theoretical models used in the study of single ionization of helium by multiply charged ions. We study several different numerical continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state (CDW-EIS) models and compare to recent experimental data for triply differential cross sections for the scattering plane for large perturbations. We observe that one type of CDW-EIS simulation based on a model potential with physically appropriate short-range and long-range behaviour leads to better agreement with experiment at high projectile charges, low electron energy and high momentum transfer than some of the earlier CDW-EIS models in the literature. It is hoped that further calculations using this CDW-EIS model to simulate triply differential cross sections, both qualitatively and quantitatively may lead to a fuller understanding of single ionization by highly charged ion impact.
