Abstract
Query weakening is the modification of the conditions involved in a query in order to obtain a less restrictive variant and then a non empty set of answers. The aim of the paper is to propose an approach for dealing with this problem in the case of fuzzy queries against relational databases. The approach rests on a transformation mechanism that consists in applying a tolerance relation on fuzzy predicates contained in the query. A particular tolerance relation, which can be conveniently modeled in terms of a parameterized fuzzy closeness relation, is discussed. The modified fuzzy predicate is obtained by a simple arithmetic operation on fuzzy numbers. The transformation must guarantee that the weakened query is not semantically speaking too far from the initial one, and its limits are handled in a non-empirical rigorous way without requiring any additional information from the user.
