Abstract
Many multicast algorithms have been proposed to address the scalability problem. In this paper, a new source specific multicast protocol, called Scalable Recursive Explicit Multicast (SREM) is proposed. SREM uses a recursive explicit multicast algorithm to set up and update multicast tree dynamically and locally and then delivers the multicast packets by unicast via branch nodes. In SREM, only branching node routers (BNRs) need to keep the the state of their next BNRs and all joining / leaving process of members of multicast sessions is carried out locally. SREM has many positive features such as fixed-size control messages and being scalable and low join/leave latency.
