Abstract
In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis of IP mobility protocols: Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) and Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6). Although both MIPv6 and HMIPv6 are efficient IP mobility protocols, the performance of IP mobility protocols may vary widely depending on the various mobility and traffic related parameters. As a consequence, it is essential to perform in-depth study and analysis of IP mobility protocols. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for the performance analysis of IP mobility protocols. Based on this analytical model, we derive the location update costs (binding update costs plus binding renewal costs), packet delivery costs, and total costs, in MIPv6 and HMIPv6, generated by an MN during its average domain residence time. According to these derived overall costs, we also investigate the performance of HMIPv6 and compare it with that of MIPv6. In addition, we investigate the effects of various parameters such as the speed of an MN, the ratio of the network scale, domain size, binding lifetime, and packet arrival rate. The analytical results demonstrate that the gain of HMIPv6 over MIPv6 will increase as the speed of an MN or binding lifetime gets larger, and its packet arrival rate gets smaller.
