Abstract
This contribution is a short introduction into the research area, which was subject of the priority program SoftSpez of the German Research Council (DFG) in the years 1998-2004. Starting with the aims of this priority program, we give an overview of the activities of SoftSpez and the related international workshops INT 2000-2004 and of the results in six different subject areas presented in this volume.
