Abstract

IEEE 802.16m amendment is being drafted to meet the 4G network requirements as an extension to IEEE 802.16e. To minimize the overhead for the state transition between awake mode and sleep mode, sleep mode schema in IEEE 802.16m omits sleep request and sleep response messages, and proposes an power saving mechanism with periodic traffic indications. Based on the concepts of the new sleep mode and considering both downlink traffic and uplink traffic, a queueing model of two servers sharing vacations with close-down time and multiple vacations is built in this paper. By employing two-dimension embedded Markov chain method, we derive the performance measures of the energy saving ratio, the system handover ratio, and the mean data frame delay time for the sleep-mode in the IEEE 802.16m.
